Natalia Emanuel is a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She earned her PhD in economics from Harvard University and completed a postdoc at Princeton. Her research has been featured by the BBC, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and NPR's Planet Money, among others. She is also coauthor of the book In Person: How Working Together Fuels Creativity, Productivity, and Growth.
In this episode we discuss the following:
Working from home can eliminate a commute, increase flexibility, and may even help us be more productive. But Natalia's research highlights some of the costs that are easier to miss.
When we work from home, we share less knowledge with colleagues. Younger employees receive less feedback. Senior employees have fewer opportunities to mentor. And maybe most importantly, we don't know what we're missing. We can't measure the conversation we never had or the idea that never surfaced over lunch.
What's best for us today may not always be what's best for our team over time.
