Scripture: “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.” — Philippians 1:3
A Couple of years ago, I saw a background picture on an elderly man’s iPad. It was the view from his front door: a beautiful snowfall covering the yard in the morning time. His wife had passed away several years earlier, and I found myself wondering why he had chosen that picture for his background.
Perhaps it reminded him of a morning they had stood together at that very door. Maybe they had watched the snow come down while having coffee together as they talked about whether the roads would clear, or simply enjoyed being home together. I don’t know what the photograph meant to him. But the thought of that moment stayed with me, and it became the beginning of a song called, “When The Snow Falls.”
When we have shared years of life with someone, ordinary things begin to hold precious memories. A familiar view, a favorite chair, or the first snow of winter can bring back a voice we long to hear again. Sometimes the memory makes us smile. Sometimes it brings tears, but most of the time it does both.
