"I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubble gum!"
That legendary line might be the most famous thing about John Carpenter's 1988 science fiction cult classic THEY LIVE, starring professional wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. But beneath the cheesy dialogue, outrageous fight scenes, and low-budget alien effects lies a surprisingly thought-provoking movie with messages that might be even MORE relevant today than they were nearly 40 years ago!
In this spoiler-lite review, Jim takes his first complete journey through THEY LIVE, a movie he's known about for decades but somehow never sat down to watch from beginning to end.
Was this overlooked sci-fi classic worth the wait? Does its commentary on consumerism, media manipulation, conformity, and humanity's willingness to embrace comfortable illusions still resonate today? And perhaps most importantly, does the actual MOVIE hold up, or have its ideas aged considerably better than its filmmaking?
We'll explore:
🕶️ The fascinating premise of a secret alien invasion hiding in plain sight.
👽 How a $3 million science fiction movie created some unforgettable imagery.
💪 Roddy Piper's transition from professional "wrassling" to Hollywood leading man.

🎬 Five reasons to watch THEY LIVE—and three reasons you might want to skip it!
Jim also shares why he's glad he finally experienced this cult classic, even if the movie itself didn't quite live up to its legendary reputation.
Sometimes the most frightening thing isn't discovering that you've been deceived. It's realizing how comfortable you've become with the deception.
And sometimes... all it takes is a pair of sunglasses to see the truth!
