On February 11, 2022, a Dodge Ram travelling roughly 90 km/h in a 50 zone crossed the centre line near Oakland, Ontario and hit a Mitsubishi head on. Twelve-year-old Sierra Beverly was killed. Her mother Naomi survived with multiple fractures and an acquired brain injury and still requires care. Investigators found no evidence of braking. This month, Ontario Court of Justice Justice Gethin Edward sentenced Darris James Wilson to two years of house arrest with a GPS monitor, rejecting the Crown's request for four years in a penitentiary. The judge's reasons expressly considered Gladue factors, including the colonization of Six Nations and its effects on Wilson's life. Sierra's family called the sentence inadequate.
