On April 19, 2022, 17-year-old Aden Perry was walking with his mother, Sarah, in Sunrise, Florida, when a vehicle crashed into a nearby lake.
When the driver called for help, Aden didn't hesitate.
He tried to save a stranger.
Tragically, Aden lost his life that night—but his story didn't end there.
On this episode of the Donut Shop Podcast, I'm joined by Aden's mother, Sarah Perry, to talk first about who Aden was: a gifted student, musician, aspiring neurosurgeon, animal lover, and young man whose instinct was always to help other people.
Sarah then takes us through the events of that night and the unimaginable experience of losing her son while he was attempting to save another person's life.
But this is also a story about what happened next.
Sarah and her family created the Aden Perry Good Samaritan and Scholarship Fund, transforming Aden's legacy of kindness and service into scholarships, educational programs, community projects, recognition of other young heroes, and the Aden Perry Hero Life Ring Initiative.
Hundreds of those life rings have now been installed near waterways—and recently, one was used in Plantation, Florida, to help rescue a driver whose vehicle had plunged into a lake.
The foundation's message is simple:
THROW, DON'T GO.
This is a conversation about Aden's life, a mother's unimaginable loss, and how one young man's instinct to help others continues to save lives and inspire acts of kindness years later.
