In June 2016, 36 year old law clerk Joseph Balderas disappeared after setting out for a hike near Mile 44 on Alaska's remote Nome–Council Highway. His truck was found abandoned, extensive searches uncovered no trace of him. Police never named any suspects and Joseph's disappearance remains unsolved.
