Sparks of Tomorrow, is Kyoto Animation’s new steampunk anime based on the light novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku. Set in an alternate early-20th-century Kyoto where steam power dominates and electricity is nowhere to be seen, the pilot follows a cynical young tinkerer and a sake brewer’s daughter as they uncover the mysterious Electrical Catalog.

On the podcast, we discuss the pilot episode, “The Electric Boy,” the show’s Mulder-and-Scully coming-of-age adventure. We make comparisons to Arcane, His Dark Materials, and Uzumaki. And we also get into Kyoto Animation’s history, the studio’s emotional perseverance and dedication to its work.
