“Just feel the music.”
It sounds like good advice—but what is a dancer actually supposed to do with it?
In this episode of Dance Colleges and Careers, Brittany Noltimier explains why “just feel it” can leave dancers stuck when they’re struggling with facial expressions, performance, and showmanship.
Expression isn’t something you either have or you don’t. It’s a skill that can be learned, practiced, and trained—just like turns, leaps, musicality, and technique.
In this episode, Brittany talks about:
- Why “I’m just not good at expressions” shouldn’t become a permanent excuse
- Why feeling an emotion and communicating it to an audience are two different skills
- How imagination and character choices can help dancers tell a story
- Why dancers sometimes internalize a performance instead of sharing it with the audience
- How teachers and parents can help dancers approach expression as a trainable skill
You don’t have to magically figure out how to “feel it.” You can learn tools, practice them, and become a stronger performer.
