This weeks podcast episode is a solo one from me about a topic that I’m extremely passionate about!
Those of you who have been listening to the podcast from the beginning may remember that I’ve spoken about allies and allyship before in Episode 2 when I talk about the top 10 things you can do to be a great ally.
Today I am taking LGBTQ+ allyship to whole different level!
The way I like to look at allyship is as though it’s a journey, a spectrum that’s broken down into 3 steps with each step building on the next:
The New Ally – New allies want to learn more about the issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community and they want to get comfortable with speaking up and standing for LGBTQ+ people. They’re supportive but not always sure what to do or how to do it.
The Everyday Ally – Everyday allies have learned a lot about LGBTQ+ challenges and struggles. They take action when they hear or see something inappropriate or discriminatory. They’re also committed to continuing to learn and seek out opportunities to be a more effective ally and support their LGBTQ+ friends, family, clients and communities.
The Super Ally – Super Allies are powerful advocates for change. They find ways to support LGBTQ+ organisations, be an active part of creating change socially, personally and sometimes politically too. They don’t shy away from debate and they uplift queer voices.
Listen in to learn about my top three actions for you whichever level of allyship you are currently at and to hear my reflections on the reasons why allyship is more important now than ever before.
