What are the muppets? Well, they’re an iconic cast of characters tied to decades of movies, tv shows, and merchandise created by the Jim Henson company in the late 1960s and then later sold to Disney in the early 2000s. But wait. It’s also a style of puppetry created by Jim and Jane Henson in the mid-1950s that applies not only to THE Muppets, capital M, but also other Jim Henson Company-created characters and properties like Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Dark Crystal, and Yoda. So what exactly IS a muppet? Well, thanks to a Supreme Court case in the 1990s, we actually have a legal definition. And, spoiler alert, The Muppets, characters like Kermit the Frog and Gonzo, don’t technically qualify.
