What is Slab City? It’s an off-the-grid unincorporated community in the California Sonoran Desert, taking its name from concrete slabs left behind by the Marine Corps and upon which the city was built. With about 150 year-round residents, Slab City is often touted as the last lawless place in America with no running water, plumbing, or food, but that’s all just kayfabe as it’s mostly just home to a bunch of aging hippies.
