My guest this week spent forty years studying death — first as a pathologist doing autopsies, later coaching people from inside her own pathology office. What she found in that work wasn't morbid. She found more life force in the morgue than she usually found walking around on an ordinary day, and that contradiction sent her looking for why.
Sabine O'Laughlin calls what she found the mother line: the idea that everybody has one mother, whatever your relationship with her looks like, and that mother gave you exactly one thing — your life. Until you can accept that fully, Sabine says, you stay closed off to receiving — not just love, but money, health, and everything else too.
This conversation is one I needed to hear myself, as someone who works in wealth consciousness all day and doesn't have a relationship with my own mother. This episode gets into where that shows up in your body, what giving too much can actually cost you, and what changes once you do this work.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- The three principles that hold family systems together — belonging, order, and the balance of give and receive — and what happens when any of them is out of balance
- Why being "a little bit dead" isn't dramatic — it's any place you learned to hold back to keep your caretakers happy, and how it shows up in your posture, your jaw, and your voice
- Why the giver, not the taker, is usually the one who kills a relationship, and how over-giving can be a form of control dressed up as generosity
- What it might mean if you've always felt like the black sheep of your family, and why that role usually isn't random
- Why Sabine says money is an energy, not a thing, and why nothing you buy will work until you can take in the source of your own wealth
- What changed for Sabine the day her mother died, and how it turned into four decades of studying death for a living
