The Edmonton Oilers recently acquired forward Filip Hallander in exchange for Spencer Stastney, betting on a player with a unique European development path. Hallander arrives in Edmonton with high hockey sense and a responsible two-way profile that could stabilize the bottom six while the team navigates early-season injuries. In this episode of Locked On Oilers, host Nick Zararis breaks down Hallander’s winding path from the Pittsburgh Penguins to Sweden and back to North America.
Drafted 57th overall back in 2018, Hallander has only suited up for 19 career NHL games despite productive stretches in both the AHL and the Swedish Hockey League. His underlying metrics show slightly above-average speed and shot velocity, yet his real upside lies in winning board battles and managing puck possession along the walls. We examine why Kyle Dubas targeted him multiple times and what that historical organizational interest reveals about his baseline skill set.
Edmonton’s coaching staff does not need Hallander to produce gaudy scoring totals to make this low-risk transaction worthwhile. Instead, relying on a seasoned European pro for roughly 12 to 13 fourth-line minutes per game prevents young prospects like Ike Howard from having their development stalled in low-leverage roles. Learn how this buy-low addition fits into the lineup permutations as injured regulars begin working their way back onto the ice.
