The Edmonton Oilers are off to a blistering 6-1-1 start through their first eight games, sparked by a historic scoring pace from Connor McDavid. With 23 points already on the board, McDavid is the fastest player to hit 20 points since Mario Lemieux in 1995–96, playing with the edge and efficiency of an all-time great on a mission. Nick Zararis breaks down why this early run looks like a classic championship revenge tour and how McDavid’s dominant 5-on-5 play is powering the roster.
A major catalyst alongside McDavid and Leon Draisaitl has been Vasily Podkolzin, who is seizing his opportunity on Edmonton's top line. Podkolzin is producing at over a point-per-game clip while logging over 19 minutes per night, ranking among the team leaders in high-danger chances and expected goals. His high-motor forechecking and willingness to battle in high-traffic areas make him the ideal complementary winger to elevate Edmonton's stars.
Between the pipes and along the blue line, Edmonton has established steady baseline competency rather than relying on miraculous goaltending. With Devon Levi and Tristan Jarry holding down the fort to provide adequate stops, Edmonton's structured defensive metrics are limiting catastrophic chances at even strength. Paired with elite pairing results from Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, the Oilers are protecting leads without constantly playing on eggshells.
The most encouraging factor for Edmonton is that this early success is happening shorthanded. Key regulars like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jason Dickinson, Matt Savoie, and Frederik Andersen have yet to make their full presence felt, while depth forwards have held down crucial minutes. As injured reinforcements return to balance the middle-six and round out the goaltending rotation, the ceiling for this Oilers team is significantly higher than early projections suggested.
