The Toronto Maple Leafs get back-to-back wins while Easton Cowan has a big night on both sides of the ice.
The Leafs delivered a convincing 6-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, using a huge second period to pull away and give Kirill Marchenko a memorable win against his former team. Easton Cowan scored a shorthanded goal and continued to make his presence felt, while Morgan Rielly answered some of his recent critics with a three-assist performance.
David Morassutti is joined by guest host Michael Mazzei to break down the Leafs' latest win, discuss the biggest performances of the night and look at what Toronto needs to build on as the season continues.
In this episode:
- Leafs crush Columbus 6-2: Toronto attacks with speed and creativity, putting together a dominant second period and earning its second straight win.
- Easton Cowan makes a statement: Cowan scores his first career NHL shorthanded goal and continues to strengthen his case for a bigger role. Could the Leafs eventually look at him as a centre?
- Morgan Rielly answers his critics: Three assists and a vintage performance raise hopes that Rielly can rediscover his offensive impact.
- Kirill Marchenko gets one over on his former team: Marchenko scores against Columbus as the Leafs' new forward continues to make an impression.
- Marshall Rifai gets his first NHL goal: The 28-year-old defenceman's perseverance pays off, and his performance becomes one of the night's best stories.
- Jake McCabe injury update: Toronto gets encouraging news after McCabe leaves the game following a stick to the face. How important is his availability with Chris Tanev already out?
- Can the Leafs rely on their penalty kill? Toronto continues to get strong results shorthanded, but the number of penalties remains a concern.
- NHL news and notes: Dylan Larkin's trade list reportedly expands to 10 teams, Connor Hellebuyck's situation in Winnipeg remains unresolved, and Brady Tkachuk prepares for a highly anticipated matchup against Florida.
Can the Leafs keep this momentum going, and is Cowan becoming too valuable to move in a potential trade?
