St. Lawrence: The Christian Joy the World Cannot Break

What can St. Lawrence teach Catholics about suffering, courage, peace, and Christian joy?In 258 AD, during the persecution of Christians in Rome, St. Lawrence knew that martyrdom could be waiting for him. When the authorities demanded the treasures of the Church, Lawrence famously presented them with the poor. And when he was eventually condemned to a brutal death on the gridiron, tradition remembers him responding with extraordinary courage—and even humor.But the lesson of St. Lawrence goes far beyond one famous line.Christian joy is not pretending that suffering doesn't hurt. It isn't optimism, comfort, or having everything go according to plan.
