Just stay quit! Easier said than done, right? For many people, quitting smoking is easierthan staying quit. The maintenance stage after quitting smoking is just as challenging, if not harder than starting your quit. "It's easy to quit, hard to stay quit," is something I've heard from many Quitters over the years. It doesn't take very much to fall right back into smoking.
Relapse Rates Are Very High For Smokers
The reality is, relapse rates are very high. Studies show that 75% of smoker's relapse within 6 months. That's high! Even if you've quit for several weeks or months you're never quite in the clear. I've talked with people who had several smoke-free yearsunder their belt, and then experienced a bad day and immediately fell back into smoking.
Relapse can happen. You always have to keep your guard up and be mindful of the fact that all it takes is one cigarette to return to the addiction. One drag from a cigarette and you could be back smoking full-time. "I'm one puff away, from a pack per day," a Quitter once said to me.
