Relationships are often the best medicine to help with healing—even in animals. Barley is a golden retriever who is recovering from epilepsy on Long Island. She started treatment in 2024 and slowly lost her playfulness. Then the family brought home a Pekin duckling and a relationship was developed. Every morning, Barley would go to the duck’s outdoor pen which has a wind-protected shed and a small pool. They enjoy each other’s company. The owner said, “Louie the duck has no idea that he’s a duck. He thinks he’s a dog.” The dog and the duck have become almost inseparable. The family says that the relationship has brought back the joy and playfulness of Barley. The relationship has certainly cured his loneliness. How good are your relationships today?
