Chris Luxon says he's glad National has a pathway to power - but he still doesn't believe vote-splitting was the right way to achieve that.

Preliminary results show National, Act and New Zealand First have 67 seats - Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori have 57 seats - and Opportunity has seven seats.

However, that could change once any recounts and special votes come in later this month.

The National Party Leader told Mike Hosking National doesn't want to see its power diminished.

He says National wants to have dominant policies and dominant ministers, and lead any coalition government it's part of.
