"I'd love to have a beer with Koenig, cause Koenig's me, mate!"

LETHAL MULLET PODCAST #328 - SPACE: 1999

Title: #328 - Space: 1999 (1975) - I'd Have A Beer With Koenig

Tagline: Commander John Koenig is stern, short-tempered, and the only bloke you'd trust to get Moonbase Alpha home. He's also me, apparently.

Episode Summary: In 1999, a freak nuclear accident blasts the Moon out of Earth orbit. 311 souls on Moonbase Alpha are cut loose into deep space. In command — Commander John Koenig.

This week on the Mullet, we go back to Gerry Anderson's most ambitious live-action epic. We talk Eagles, Explosive Decompression, Barry Gray's epic score, Martin Landau vs. the universe, and why this show still goes harder than most modern sci-fi.

It was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson as a UK space series running 48 episodes from 1975-78, starring husband-and-wife duo Martin Landau and Barbara Bain as base Commander John Koenig and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Helena Russell.

In This Episode We Cover:

  • The Setup: Moonbase Alpha as both research center and early warning station for alien attack, until waste Area 2 goes critical and sends the Moon hurtling into the unknown
  • Koenig The Man: Why he works - Mark Bonnar's new reboot describes him as stern and short-tempered leader John Koenig, and Landau plays it exactly like that. No Kirk charm, all command pressure
  • Main Mission & The Crew: Helena Russell (Bain), Victor Bergman (Barry Morse), Alan Carter (Nick Tate - 42 eps), Sandra Benes, Maya in S2
  • The Hardware: Eagle Transporters - the greatest sci-fi workhorse ever built. Hawks, Moonbuggies, and model work by Brian Johnson that still holds up
  • The Look & Sound: Season 1's dark, 2001-esque seriousness vs Season 2's monster-of-the-week under Fred Freiberger. Barry Gray's score, Derek Meddings' SFX
  • Classic Episodes: Breakaway, Black Sun, War Games, Dragon's Domain, The Testament of Arkadia
  • Legacy: From ITC to Apple TV's announced reboot - why Space: 1999 predicted long-form survival sci-fi 25 years before BSG
