Tonight on Triple Feature we are looking at Michael, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Doors. Three movies about three of the most recognizable figures in popular music, and three very different ideas about what a musical biopic is supposed to accomplish. Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison were all transformed by fame into something larger than human beings, but Hollywood has approached their stories with very different agendas. Michael examines the construction of a global phenomenon while navigating the controversies surrounding Jackson’s legacy. Bohemian Rhapsody rearranges Freddie Mercury’s history into a crowd-pleasing story of estrangement, redemption and the triumph of Live Aid. Oliver Stone’s The Doors goes in the opposite direction, exaggerating Jim Morrison’s darkness until the mythology nearly consumes the man. We’ll discuss the performances, the music, the history, what each movie changes or leaves out, and whether a music biopic owes us the truth or just a great show.
