So much for principle. So much for integrity. So much for putting the country before your political career.
John Healey was hailed as a politician with principles when he dramatically resigned as Defence Secretary over defence spending. He effectively accused Keir Starmer's government and the Treasury of failing to give our Armed Forces the money they needed. He told Parliament Britain needed to spend 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. His resignation helped pile the pressure onto an already crumbling Starmer government and Healey emerged looking like that rarest of creatures — a politician prepared to sacrifice his job for his principles.
Fast-forward a few weeks and Healey is back around the Cabinet table — this time as Chancellor of the Exchequer. And what happens to that great principle now HE controls the purse strings? Suddenly the 3% target can wait.
You couldn't make it up! Was his resignation really about Britain's national security — or was it another calculated move up the greasy political pole? If John Healey genuinely believed Britain was being put at risk by inadequate defence spending, how can he now justify delaying the very commitment he demanded from Starmer? And that raises a much bigger question: CAN WE TRUST ANY OF THEM? Do our MPs actually have principles anymore? Or do principles last only until they get in the way of the next Cabinet job, leadership contest or political promotion?
Are politicians entering Parliament to change the country — or simply to climb the greasy pole?
