You Bet Your Life was the quiz show that was really a comedy show, built entirely around the lightning-fast wit of Groucho Marx. This is the original audition recording — the demonstration disc that Groucho and producer John Guedel financed and cut themselves at a CBS studio on September 15, 1947, weeks before the show's official ABC premiere. It captures the very first time the format was tried out: Groucho as a quiz host who cares far more about ribbing his contestants than about the questions, ad-libbing his way through interviews with everyday people and proving that the show's real prize was the laughter. This audition sold ABC on the series and launched one of the longest, best-loved runs in broadcast history.
