Russian forces are increasingly attacking with less protected mobility, smaller assault groups, and fewer reserves available to exploit a breakthrough. Ukrainian drones make concentrated armor and supply columns easier to detect, pushing more troops onto foot approaches that carry less ammunition and move more slowly. Smaller formations can still enter contested ground, but turning those local gains into sustained advances has become increasingly difficult.
Former Navy SEAL Chuck Pfarrer explains why drones cannot replace tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, engineers, logistics, and fresh formations after a defensive line gives way. Jason Jay Smart examines the strategic pressure created when incoming personnel largely replace battlefield losses instead of building additional combat power. Replacing numbers does not restore experienced crews, specialists, command teams, protected transport, or the reserve force needed to exploit an opening before Ukraine reinforces it.
Across the wider campaign, Moscow is also stretching drones, missiles, air-defense systems, repair capacity, and replacement equipment across competing military demands. Scarce radars, interceptors, crews, and logistics must now support the front while protecting a growing number of sites farther behind it. Without enough protected mobility and fresh reserves, Russia can maintain pressure but has fewer ways to turn tactical success into a major operational breakthrough.
