Are you in a toxic relationship and constantly wondering whether you should leave, stay, or keep trying to fix it? In this episode of The Overthinker’s Handbook, I’m joined by Hollywood producer Tiara Cosme to talk about five major red flags that your relationship may be unhealthy, and more importantly, how to tell the difference between a toxic pattern that can be worked through and a relationship where the other person refuses to change.

We talk about what happens when one person is carrying most of the relationship while the other person underfunctions, avoids responsibility, or expects their partner to manage everything. Over time, this can create resentment, exhaustion, and a dynamic where one person feels like they are constantly asking for the bare minimum. We also discuss what it means when you can no longer safely bring problems to your partner because every conversation turns into defensiveness, blame shifting, gaslighting, guilt, or somehow ends with you apologizing for being hurt.

Tiara and I also break down what happens when someone weaponizes your vulnerabilities against you. Your insecurities, trauma, jealousy, childhood wounds, or painful experiences should never become ammunition in an argument. We talk about how emotional safety erodes when your partner uses the things you trusted them with to shame you, dismiss your feelings, or convince you that every problem is somehow your fault. We also discuss isolation in toxic and abusive relationships, including the difference between having legitimate concerns about a friendship and intentionally manipulating someone into cutting off friends, family, and outside support.

One of the biggest themes in this episode is accountability. Healthy relationships are not perfect. People get defensive, make mistakes, communicate poorly, and hurt each other on the occation. The difference is what happens afterward. Does your partner care about the impact of their behavior? Do they apologize, repair, and make an effort to change? Or do they give temporary effort, make excuses, and eventually repeat the same behavior?

If you have been searching for signs of a toxic relationship, emotional abuse signs, gaslighting in relationships, relationship red flags, emotional safety, relationship boundaries, toxic communication, manipulation, or how to know when it is time to leave a relationship, this episode will help you look at the bigger pattern instead of one isolated argument.
