Trading Psychology | Episode 11 | When Habits Make the Decisions

In this episode of the Trading Psychology series, Ostad Arman from the SMCFX Trading Elites Association explores two important forces behind our behavior and decisions: beliefs and habits.

We often assume that many of our everyday behaviors are conscious choices. But when a behavior is repeated often enough, it can gradually become a habit—something we no longer consciously decide to do. From the first thing we do after waking up to the routines we repeat before going to sleep, parts of our daily lives may be shaped by patterns we barely notice anymore.

This episode explores the difference between beliefs and habits, the importance of reviewing our everyday behaviors, and practical ways to uncover hidden patterns. Before we can change a habit or rebuild a belief, we first need to recognize it and understand which of our decisions are truly conscious and which are simply the result of repetition.

Ostad Arman also discusses generalized beliefs built around ideas such as “everyone,” “anyone,” and similar absolute assumptions. Sometimes, finding even one meaningful exception can challenge such a belief and create an opportunity to reconsider it.

The episode also introduces a practical exercise for identifying habits: recording your daily activities from morning to night and observing behaviors that have become so automatic that you may no longer notice them.

The central message is simple: many choices aren't really choices—sometimes, our habits have already made the decision for us.
