The night before the final reckoning, both Odysseus and Penelope lie awake in the palace. Odysseus receives encouragement from Athena, while Penelope pours out her grief to the goddess Artemis. In the morning the suitors resume their arrogant feasting with even greater recklessness, unaware that the disguised king is watching their every move. Divine omens appear as the storm inside Ithaca continues to build.
