Rees Jones grew up immersed in the world of golf course architecture as the son of legendary designer Robert Trent Jones Sr., eventually studying at Yale and Harvard to hone his craft. After working within his father's prominent firm, he established his own practice in 1974 to forge a distinct independent career. Rather than solely designing new layouts, he developed a celebrated specialty in renovating and restoring historic championship courses to challenge modern players. By carefully balancing modern strategy with historical preservation, he earned the famous moniker of "The Open Doctor." Ultimately, his meticulous diagnostic approach allowed him to step out of his father's shadow and become a master architect in his own right.
