Queer suburban place-making, unmaking and remaking with Alison Bain and Julie Podmore

What is LGBTQ+ life like in the suburbs? Some would argue it isn't very vibrant, if it is there at all. Alison Bain and Julie Podmore join the podcast this week to share how that argument doesn't hold for Canadian metropolitan suburbs. Their book "Queerburbia" presents research findings from 10 municipalities across Canada and in this episode they outline some of its key contributions. Speaking about the "queerburban", Alison and Julie reflect on the enabling power of neologisms in making the unnamed and overlooked aspects of (urban) life concrete. As it relates to the queerburban, place is made, unmade and remade by a variety of institutional, governmental, civic and subcultural actors that are very much a part of city life writ large.
