The sands of Dorne crunch beneath the horses of Ned Stark’s party, a hard ride of thirteen men, mostly Northmen in dented mail, a few Stormlanders with torn surcoats and salt-dry faces. They soon come to a halt as they near a solitary tower that thrusts up from the sand like a spear. The Tower of Joy, Ned calls it.

Beside him, Robert is the first off his horse and approaches the tower, shouldering his hammer and spitting on the ground.
