This is narration of Chapter 9 of the novel MYSTERIOUS MATTERS OF MAX METTERS by PETER GELMAN. This is the climax of the first half of the novel. Chapter description: "When I'm old they can pull me up like a coelacanth and say, 'Hey man I thought all you punk rockers was x-tinct stuffed and mounted in the Smithsonian parking lot right after the moon rockets." "Oceans and beaches of the she-shore--she leavened her dreamy bread with eyes like fists." As their relationship buckles and cracks, Meri STILL doesn't tell Max her secret, and Max will not ask. Drinking downtown, Max and friends ponder such things as their punk rock generation, changes to the Minneapolis skyline, Cold War problems, and angst in the local women. Then the answer to Meri's secret comes a-crashing down on Max. The length of this episode is about 43 minutes. It includes some curse words. Novel description: Passion, philosophy, fisticuffs and word ferment... This is a “boy meets girl” story. Max discovers that Meri has a secret. He gives her every chance to tell it. Defiant, he even fights friends who try to warn him. Max vibrates with energy and feeling, an unrealistic way to live. This leads to troubled love affairs, complex friendships, tumbling thoughts and mad conversations. In the ‘90s, readers passed around the Do-it-Yourself photocopied pages of this punk rock romantic novel. Now, new readers can discover its vigorous “maximalist” voice that celebrates the sound and taste of words. Available as a paper book or ebook (Kindle, Nook): tinyurl.com/maxmetters .
