Your AI Tools Are Rented: Authority, Limits, and Failure Drills

OpenAI says it intends to wind down the contract supplying its models to Cursor after Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, with a proposed cutoff date of November 12, 2026. The practical lesson reaches far beyond those companies. Important AI workflows depend on providers, models, compute limits, permissions, and people we do not fully control.

This episode examines three developments from the previous 24 hours. OpenAI's announced Cursor decision. Google's move to flexible Gemini Notebook usage limits that refresh every five hours and vary by workload. AWS's continuous AI-modernization pattern, including AWS's own warning that faster development can compound hidden technical debt.

The common thread is command authority. Capability describes what an AI can do. Authority determines what it is permitted to read, change, send, publish, purchase, or delete. A system does not need consciousness to cause damage. It needs a bad assumption and more authority than the task requires.

Connor also pressure-tests the productivity story. Three times the output does not automatically mean three times the jobs. Demand still has to absorb the work. Leadership can keep the gain through headcount reduction, or use the capacity to improve service, shorten response times, build new products, enter new markets, and reserve judgment-heavy work for people.

The practical move is a 15-minute authority-and-dependency drill. Map one workflow's providers, data, tools, permissions, owner, and manual fallback. Remove one unnecessary permission. Then simulate the provider disappearing tomorrow.
