The 31st podcast expresses the ideas of regrowth and rejuvenation after a long winter. Silent Season’s label boss Jamie McCue takes us to the coast of British Columbia for a two hour long journey of deep and ethereal sounds inspired by the radiant beauty of the rainforests of Canada’s Vancouver Island. “I recorded this mix in my back garden chilling out in the sun with a few friends. The night before we played a pretty big gathering so this was the perfect vibe to chill out and enjoy some deeper music.”
“I enjoy making long mixes for headphone listening. For travelling, walking, relaxing, mostly through personal experiences. That said, I also enjoy playing events or parties where it’s connecting with people on the dancefloor. In both contexts It’s important to play music suitable to the environment, make people smile and close their eyes to get lost in the sound.”
McCue got into electronic music in the late 90’s and mentions the familiar German labels that infused his passion of dub techno and minimal. “The artists that were of great influence on me early on were Rod Modell, Deepchord, Maurizio, Salz, Gas, Rhythm & Sound and Theorem to name a few. There are so many to list especially during the early 2000s. My musical preferences take me all over the map. I’m open to most sounds between ambient, drone, downtempo, dub, techno etc as long as it’s deep and connects with me in some way.” This passion for music evolved in setting up his own label Silent Season back in 2007.
Within the label’s aesthetics we see this fusion between music and the environment happen. The music is always accompanied with photographs of his ‘garden’. “Silent Season’s releases, the label is consumed by nature — immense, enveloping nature. It’s woven as common thread through the labels spanning sub genres of ambient and techno music in the never-ending quest to capture the sublime”.
The sublime in this case is not the forest itself, but the feeling of insignificance and finitude that is evoked by it. “A forest of trees so huge, tall and ancient we all look like little children beside them. A world of vivid green moss, arching ferns, and a mass of plants so thick it’s impossible to see the soil beneath it. The parallels between deep dub influenced music wash over you much like a foggy forest stroll on a rainy morning.”
