There is no blood test for bipolar disorder. That is what our guest tonight will tell you. No scan for schizophrenia. No biological marker anywhere in medicine that proves a human being is depressed. She found that out after 20 years of looking, and she calls it the biggest lie in America hiding in plain sight.
Her mother was the healthiest person in the house. Supplement packs. Yoga before anyone in that town had heard of it. A preacher's daughter who read her own black box warnings and asked her doctors why she should swallow something carrying that label. Nobody ever answered her.
Then three people she loved died inside a single year. Her marriage came apart. She was moving through menopause. And the system called all of that an illness.
What followed was hospital after hospital after hospital, across two decades. The family had the best insurance money could buy. Glass offices looking out over the Pacific. Infinity pools. They spent close to a million dollars. At one point they hired private investigators just to find her.
Miriam Putnam was 19 years old, standing in a hospital room, arguing on her mother's behalf, when a doctor turned to her and said that if anyone in this family has the gene, it's you.
She lost her mother. She says her mother died of a broken heart.
And then, years later, it came for her. Seizures. Sleep gone. Nothing showing up on any blood test. And doctors reaching for the same category they had used on her mother.
Tonight she tells us what she found in the years between. What she believes is actually happening inside 80 to 90 percent of the people we call mentally ill. The 300,000 American children under the age of five she says are medicated tonight. The four states she counts that have banned electric shock. And what she says is still being done to children behind closed doors.
