The 185th episode of the Jeton Records Radio Show welcomes Speedy J, from Rotterdam.

Jochem Paap, better known as Speedy J, has been one of the defining figures in European techno since the early 1990s. Emerging alongside artists such as Laurent Garnier, Aphex Twin and Richie Hawtin, his early releases on Plus 8, Warp and Novamute helped shape a period when techno was rapidly expanding beyond its Detroit origins.

Across albums including Ginger, G Spot, Public Energy No. 1 and Loudboxer, Speedy J continually moved between different sides of electronic music, from atmospheric and experimental productions to uncompromising club-focused techno. His work has also extended beyond conventional releases into audiovisual projects such as Umfeld, collaborations with other artists, and new approaches combining live hardware, software and DJ performance.

Through Electric Deluxe, Speedy J created a platform for his own work as well as music from artists including Chris Liebing, Tommy Four Seven and Terrence Fixmer. More recently, he founded STOOR, a Rotterdam-based studio, label and live performance project built around hardware improvisation and collaboration. Its sessions bring multiple artists together around interconnected machines, creating electronic music collectively and in real time.

More than three decades after his first Speedy J releases, he remains closely connected to the development of techno through production, performance, collaboration and experimentation with technology.

We’re honored to feature Speedy J on this month’s Jeton Records Radio Show with his set recorded live at Torax in Barcelona on May 11th, 2025.

Enjoy!
