Golf has plenty of official rules, but somehow, golfers have invented an entirely separate rulebook of things you’re just supposed to know. In Episode 08 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Tox take on Golf’s Dumbest Unwritten Rules and try to figure out where legitimate etiquette ends and pointless golf judgment begins.

Hats indoors. Untucked shirts. Denim. Changing your shoes in the parking lot. Too many headcovers. 14-way bags. And, of course, the undisputed heavyweight champion of unnecessary golf arguments: iron covers. If none of these things affect another golfer’s round, why does anyone care? Ryan (Hawk) and Jeremy (Lord Tox) debate which traditions still have a place in the game, and which ones golfers need to stop taking so seriously.

Then they head to the course to tackle the unwritten rules that might actually matter. Should honors on the tee give way to ready golf? Is talking to someone else’s ball harmless encouragement or an unforgivable offense? Can you call a putt before it drops? And do you really need to gently place the flagstick on the green?

Not every unwritten rule deserves to disappear. Repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers, keeping pace, respecting another player’s concentration, and taking care of the course all make golf better for everyone. Maybe that’s the real test, the best etiquette usually makes golf better for somebody other than you.

If you could erase one unwritten rule from golf tomorrow, which one goes?
