Golfers can be a stubborn bunch, especially when it comes to equipment. We all have preferences, whether it’s a certain shaft flex, clubhead shape, or even the weight of our golf clubs. But what happens when those preferences actually get in the way of better performance?
That’s the question we’re tackling in Episode 14 of Splitting Fairways.
For years, lightweight golf clubs have carried a certain stigma. Mention a 40-gram driver shaft or a 60-gram graphite iron shaft, and plenty of golfers immediately think of equipment designed for seniors or players with slower swing speeds. But is that perception keeping golfers from finding something that could actually improve their games?
Lightweight Golf Clubs vs. Heavier Shafts
This week’s discussion comes from two very different perspectives.
Ryan recently spent time testing the XXIO 14+ lineup, including irons featuring incredibly lightweight 59-gram shafts. The results were surprising, producing some of his fastest iron speeds in the past year without the loss of head awareness you might expect.
Of course, there’s another side to the conversation.
Jeremy generates considerably more swing speed and approaches equipment weight differently. While he prefers iron shafts in the 100–110-gram range, going too light can create issues with timing, tempo, and overall control.
So where is the sweet spot? Is Your Ego Getting in the Way of Better Golf?
That’s where things get interesting.
Are golfers choosing heavier shafts because they genuinely perform better, or because playing something lighter feels like admitting they need help?
The goal isn’t to play lighter golf clubs. It’s to play the right ones.
