I played this episode on version 4 of the LED bar, the one printed in transparent filament. It is brighter. The trouble is that the clear plastic lets the light spill onto the keys on either side, so you lose the look of a single key lighting up on its own. For the October 9 live stream I went back to the black bar, and I’m sticking with it until version 5 is ready.

Where version 5 stands

Version 5 needs a custom circuit board, so realistically a working prototype is a month away, probably longer. The 3D files for the current bar gave me the exact spot where each of the 88 lights needs to sit. Most keys are about 14 mm apart, but the spacing runs anywhere from 12.4 to 16 mm, and down at C1 and C#1 the lenses end up only 2.5 mm apart.

The plan right now is eight boards, each about 150 mm long and 20 mm wide, lying flat in the channel where the LED strip sits today, with 10 to 12 lights on each one. A couple of the lights land within a millimeter or two of a joint in the bar, so the boards will split between keys and not at the joints. They’d take the same kind of signal from the Pi that the current strip uses.

Nothing gets ordered until the five-key test is done. That test has to settle how much power each light gets, which lens looks best, what shade of white works on the black keys, and whether the camera picks up any flicker. Then one board gets made and fitted into the bar before I order the other seven.

What happened on October 9

Partway through that October 9 live stream I went to unmute and hit the record button instead. About half the stream went out with no sound, and the recording on my computer stopped right at that point too.

The Disklavier had recorded the whole set as I played it, so I played it all back on the piano and recorded the sound again. Then I pulled the video from YouTube, lined the new audio up with it in Final Cut Pro, deleted the broken stream from YouTube and Facebook, and re-aired the fixed version later that morning. The October 9 stream on the channel now is that repaired version.

Getting ahead, then the album

I finished this episode on Friday, October 9, and the plan was to finish another one the next day, along with some TCC shorts. Once I have enough podcasts and shorts scheduled to carry us through the end of XPERTS on November 14, all of my focus goes to the album, Hallowed Be Your Name.

Psalm 99

Last week ended with Psalm 97. Psalm 99 opens the same way, “The LORD reigns,” and keeps coming back to one line: he is holy. This Pray the Bible Short is A Prayer Before the Holy King, from Psalm 99:5 and 8-9.

Watch the Psalm 99 prayer on YouTube.

Thanks for praying along this week.
