Episode 89: Waiting for Guffman (1997)

I revisit Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman (1997), a small-town mockumentary that I had almost no memory of seeing before this rewatch.

What starts as a simple story about a community theatre production becomes a hilarious and surprisingly affectionate look at ambition, ego and the desire to feel special. With an incredible ensemble cast including Christopher Guest, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Parker Posey, the film finds humour in people who are completely sincere, even when their dreams might be bigger than their talents.

It’s a film full of memorable characters, strange auditions, awkward conversations and moments that somehow become both ridiculous and genuinely touching. A reminder that sometimes the things we take most seriously are the things that make us the funniest.
