In this episode, we visit Jeffrey Deitch in his beautiful home in Los Angeles. Jeffrey is an art dealer and curator, best known for his influential gallery, Deitch Projects.
Jeffrey has an extraordinary art collection, with several works currently on loan to museums, but every piece in the collection comes with its own unique story. While the collection includes many masterpieces, it also features works by younger and less established artists. In this episode, we take a closer look at a number of these works - and, just as importantly, the incredible anecdotes connected to them.
Among other things, we’ll explore a piece by Julian Schnabel, a portrait of Jeffrey himself. We’ll also talk about the artist Sickid and how Jeffrey first discovered his work. Driving along the 101 freeway near the Echo Park area, Jeffrey noticed a striking figurative graffiti billboard takeover unlike anything he had seen before. At the bottom, it was signed “ Sickid.” Intrigued, he started asking around, hoping to meet the artist. Later, during a visit to Ozzy Juarez, he unexpectedly met Sickid in person and immediately said, “We’re going to do an exhibition.” A few months later, they opened a show together, which became an instant sensation, with lines stretching around the block. They are now planning another exhibition in New York City next year.
