If Your Eye Be Single | Sermon on the Mount: Part 23

Straight Bible continues Sermon on the Mount: Part 23 with a deep study of Matthew 6:19–24, focusing on Jesus’ teaching about treasure in heaven, the single eye, spiritual sight, and the warning that no one can serve both God and mammon. What does Jesus mean when He says, “If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light”? This episode traces that teaching across Scripture to show how our attention, faith, priorities, and spiritual vision are connected. The study begins with King Josiah and the rediscovery of the Word of God. Through Deuteronomy 17 and 2 Kings 23, the conversation examines why Israel’s kings were commanded to remain immersed in Scripture, how Solomon compromised with idolatry, and why Josiah responded by radically removing false worship from the land. That history becomes a picture of what it means to reject “God plus” religion and remain focused on God alone. The discussion then moves into spiritual warfare through 2 Corinthians 10 and Ephesians 6. Christians are not called to wage war against flesh and blood, but to tear down spiritual strongholds, bring thoughts into obedience to Christ, and put on the whole armor of God. Hebrews 12 and 1 Corinthians 6 raise another important question: even if something is technically lawful, has it become a weight that distracts you from Jesus? The episode then connects Numbers 21’s brazen serpent with Galatians 3, 2 Corinthians 5, Isaiah 45, and Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. Israel looked at the serpent and lived; Jesus explains that the Son of Man would likewise be lifted up. Finally, John 9 and Genesis 3 reveal a deeper contrast between physical sight and spiritual blindness. From the man born blind to Adam and Eve’s opened eyes and Paul’s later blindness, the Bible repeatedly asks the same question: What are your eyes fixed on?
