In 1840, Beirut was a small port town caught between an ambitious Egyptian governor and a decaying Ottoman Empire. When Muhammad Ali's son Ibrahim Pasha pushed too far, the great powers—Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia—turned their guns on the city. This episode follows the summer of that year: the Allied fleet under Charles Napier, the shelling that set Beirut ablaze, the flight of Ibrahim Pasha's forces, and the return of Ottoman rule under the 1841 Règlement Organique. Along the way, we meet Emir Bashir II, the Shihab prince who staked his dynasty on the wrong side, and the foreign consuls who watched their city burn. Lucas and Luna untangle a moment when Lebanon's fate was decided not by its own people, but by European gunboats—a pattern that would echo for the next century and a half.
