After the devastating defeat at Mohács in 1526, Hungary was carved up between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire. This episode explores the 150-year Turkish occupation of central Hungary: how Buda became a pashalik, the system of administration and taxation, religious toleration of Protestants, the rise of the hajdúk irregular soldiers, and the slow erosion of Ottoman control. We follow the campaigns of Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, the long sieges of Eger and Székesfehérvár, and the peace of Zsitvatorok that froze the border.
