By late 1944, Budapest was trapped in a vice. As the Red Army closed in from the east and Hungarian forces fought desperately to hold the line, the city became one of the most brutal sieges of World War II. This episode explores the winter of 1945, when over half a million civilians were caught between German SS units under General Hermann Reznik and Soviet troops led by Marshal Malinovsky. We look at the collapse of Operation Konrad, the desperate defense of Buda Castle, and the tragic firebombing that reduced much of the historic district to ash. It is a story of military miscalculation, civilian suffering, and the final, bloody struggle for control of the Danube's capital.
