In 1932, a group of military officers and civilians staged a bloodless coup that ended three hundred years of absolute rule in Siam. This episode explores the Khana Ratsadon, or People's Party, led by Pridi Phanomyong and Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who transformed the kingdom into a constitutional monarchy. We examine the tension between the radical reforms envisioned by Pridi, including economic planning and education overhaul, and the nationalist agenda pushed by the military faction under Phibun. The story covers the drafting of the provisional constitution, the royal response of King Prajadhipok, and the immediate aftermath that set the stage for Thailand’s complex political landscape in the twentieth century.
