When Emperor He of Han died suddenly in 106 AD, his young and brilliant widow Empress Dowager Deng Sui took control of the Eastern Han court. For sixteen years, she ruled as regent, navigating factional intrigue, foreign invasions, and natural disasters with a combination of Confucian virtue and ruthless political calculation. Deng Sui expanded education for women, reformed the bureaucracy, and crushed rebellions by the Qiang tribes and the Xiongnu. Yet she also imprisoned rivals and executed critics. This episode explores the contradictions of a woman who wielded supreme power in a deeply patriarchal system, drawing on the Book of Later Han (Hou Han Shu) by Fan Ye. We examine her early life as a child prodigy, her manipulation of the imperial harem, her military campaigns, and her controversial legacy as both a wise ruler and a power-hungry consort.
