In the twilight of the Classic Maya, while Tikal and Calakmul fought to a standstill, a small city in the Lacandon jungle commissioned the most stunning artistic statement of the age: the murals of Bonampak. This episode follows the rise of Chan Muan, a ruler who may not have been of royal blood, and the violent battles he commemorated in paint. We explore how the murals were discovered in 1946, their astonishingly vivid colors, and what they reveal about warfare, ritual bloodletting, and the 'stranger king' phenomenon. As the southern lowlands emptied, Bonampak's art burned bright—and then went silent.
