While we have explored the limestone blocks, the quarries of Tura and Aswan, and the administrative logs of Merer at Wadi el-Jarf, there is a silent component of the Giza necropolis that rarely makes it to the surface. In this episode, Lucas and Luna examine the four subterranean pits carved directly into the bedrock of the Giza Plateau, adjacent to the Great Pyramid’s southern face. These shafts housed Khufu’s ceremonial vessels, most notably the famous Khufu ship discovered intact in 1954. We trace how these wooden hulls were assembled using mortise-and-tenon joints without nails, reflecting the maritime technology of the Fourth Dynasty. The discussion moves from the archaeological mystery of why the ships were disassembled and buried, to the religious significance of the solar barque as a vehicle for the king’s soul across the Duat. We also touch upon the later rediscovery by Kamal el-Mallakh and the ongoing conservation debates surrounding the reconstructed vessel now displayed nearby.
