Before you give up hiking because of your hip, there is something you need to understand first. Most women who stop hiking do it for a reason that is not actually true. The trail is not the problem. It is exposing a breakdown that flat ground has been hiding all along.
In this episode, I'm going to explain why hip pain shows up on hills and uneven trails but not on flat ground, and walk you through a simple test you can do tonight to find out what is actually driving it.

â QUESTIONS ANSWEREDÂ
Why does my hip hurt on hikes but not on flat ground? Flat, predictable ground lets your body compensate and hide a hip positioning problem that has been building for a long time. Hills and uneven steps demand more from the hip stabilizers and femur positioning, so the breakdown that was already there finally shows up and forces you to notice it.
Should I stop hiking if my hip hurts on the trail? Not automatically. If pain settles back to your baseline within 24 hours and flat walking is manageable, this is usually a correctable positioning and stability issue, not a reason to quit hiking for good. Giving up the trail permanently often means losing progress you never had to lose.
How do I know if my hip pain is a positioning problem or a stability problem? Try walking up and down a few stairs slowly and pay close attention to where you feel it. Pinching or compression at the front of the hip points to femoral positioning, while a pelvis that drops, wobbles, or feels unsteady points to a stability issue instead. Knowing which one you are dealing with changes exactly how you should be training and correcting it.
