In this episode of Why'd They Wear That?, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly revisit Brian De Palma's 1984 thriller Body Double and break down its most outrageous fashion moments across 10 increasingly unhinged scenes. What Stacy remembered as a complicated, psychosexual mystery turns out to be an exploitative, wildly entertaining fever dream involving a struggling actor, a futuristic Hollywood house, a telescope, a nightly lingerie dance, a murder plot, and more questionable male fantasy than either of them was prepared to revisit.
They examine Sam Bouchard's all-polyester acting-class ensemble, Gloria Revelle's rhinestone thong and transparent robe, her polished Beverly Hills shopping look, and the baffling decision to buy new underwear, change into it immediately, and throw the old pair away. They also unpack the movie's signature mid-1980s glamour, including silk jacquard, cinched waists, gold eye shadow, aviators, scarves, vertical blinds, padded shoulders, leopard print, metallic bodysuits, and bags hanging from impossibly thin straps.
When Melanie Griffith finally arrives as adult-film star Holly Body, Stacy and Clinton turn their attention to the movie's leather-filled club scene, assless unitards, studded suspenders, dramatic coats, ear cuffs, pencil skirts, vinyl pants, and one of the longest and least convincing audition sequences ever filmed. Along the way, they question the movie's misogyny, laugh through its supposedly serious thriller scenes, perform Holly's memorable contract monologue, and try to determine whether any of the film's sexual staging is anatomically possible.
